Where US retreats actually concentrate
How to read this page
These are regions where formats concentrate, not a ranking. The types page explains why format beats destination. The vetting checklist works on any property you find. Listings links go to BookRetreats, which shows dates, prices, and reviews per property. Counts and inventory change, so treat any number as a snapshot from the date given.
Arizona

The densest spiritual-wellness scene in the country sits around Sedona. Red-rock scenery there anchors everything from silent meditation formats to energy-work-forward programs. Tucson and Scottsdale run the classic destination-spa version of the same desert.
Fits: Spa weeks, meditation and silent formats, solo travelers who want infrastructure around solitude.
Season note: Desert seasons are inverted. October–April is the reliable window, and summer programs move indoors or to dawn hours.
California

This is the deepest bench of any state. Ojai and the Central Coast do teaching-led yoga and meditation. Palm Springs does rest-first spa formats, and wine country does food-and-movement programming. The Big Sur coastline covers the contemplative end of the spectrum.
Fits: Every type on our taxonomy exists here at multiple price bands. California is where comparison shopping across formats is genuinely possible.
Season note: Coastal properties book out furthest ahead; inland desert follows Arizona seasonality.
Colorado

Mountain wellness with movement built in. That means hiking-forward programs, hot-springs towns, and high-alpine quiet that structured meditation formats use deliberately.
Fits: Active retreaters, couples formats built around shared activity, summer escapes from southern heat.
Season note: Altitude is a real variable. Many properties sit above 8,000 feet, which affects sleep, alcohol, and exertion in the first days. Factor it into a short stay.
Florida

The coastal spa-resort model shows up here at every scale. Florida also has the strongest winter season in the country, plus the easiest access from the East Coast.
Fits: Rest-first spa formats, winter escapes, travelers who want a retreat without a connecting flight.
Season note: Summer is hurricane season, with real cancellation risk. Read the property’s weather policy before booking June–November.
Hawaii

Ocean-side immersion, where the setting does much of the work. Longer-stay yoga and healing formats cluster here. The distance from the mainland self-selects for people committing more than a weekend.
Fits: Week-plus stays, milestone trips, formats where unplugging matters more than a schedule.
Season note: Flight cost and time shift the budget math. The full-trip reconstruction in our vetting guide matters most here.
New York

The Catskills and Hudson Valley concentrate the Northeast’s teaching-led scene. You get meditation centers with decades of history and yoga-forward properties. Weekend formats are built around the drive from the city.
Fits: First retreats, weekend formats, and meditation lineages with published schedules. Nonprofit centers here also give some of the strongest budget options anywhere.
Season note: Fall foliage weekends price like holidays; the same program in November often costs meaningfully less.
Utah

Red-rock adventure-wellness. Properties pair canyon hiking and outdoor programming with spa recovery, in scenery that competes with any in the country.
Fits: Active retreaters, hiking-plus-spa combinations, travelers who found Arizona’s scene but want fewer crowds.
Season note: A smaller scene than its neighbors: 20 listings on BookRetreats when we checked (August 2026). So dates drive the choice more than elsewhere.
Washington

Pacific Northwest forest quiet — island and peninsula properties where the format leans contemplative, plus Seattle-accessible weekend options.
Fits: Silence-seekers, writers-and-thinkers formats, summer trips when the region’s weather is at its best.
Season note: The famous gray season is real October–May. It suits inward-facing formats and works against pool-and-terrace expectations.
The whole-country view
Sometimes you know the week but not the place. For dates-first shopping like that, the national listings page filters by month across every region above. Outbound booking links on this page are affiliate links when tracking is configured; see the disclosure. Commission never orders this page — regions are listed alphabetically, not by payment.
Destination questions
What is the best wellness retreat destination in the US?
It depends on the format you need, so work backward from that. Arizona and California dominate for breadth and the spa-plus-spiritual end. New York’s Catskills lead the teaching-led and budget end. Colorado and Utah suit active formats, and Florida owns the easy winter spa week. Hawaii rewards longer stays, and Washington suits contemplative quiet. Our types page pairs each format with what it should cost, and the regions above say where each format concentrates.
Where are the most affordable wellness retreats in the US?
Three things are structurally cheapest. Nonprofit meditation centers come first, heavily concentrated in New York’s Catskills and upstate, with West Coast counterparts. Then donation-based and dorm-style formats. Then shoulder-season bookings anywhere seasonal: November in the Northeast, summer in the desert Southwest. "Affordable" listings elsewhere usually mean a lower nightly rate with the real costs moved into travel and add-ons. That is why our vetting guide makes you reconstruct the full-trip cost first.
Are there all-inclusive wellness retreats in the USA?
Yes. The destination-spa model, concentrated in Arizona, California, and Florida, is typically packaged with meals and a program schedule. Structured meditation retreats are all-inclusive by nature. But the term hides wide variation, since "all-inclusive" can omit treatments, gratuities, and airport transfers. Treat the phrase as a starting claim to verify against the property’s own inclusion list, not a price guarantee.
What about solo wellness retreats in the USA?
Solo is the default retreat traveler, not the exception. Meditation and silent formats are built for it, and most yoga and spa properties seat singles without ceremony. Check two things as a solo booker. First, the single-supplement policy, since shared-room defaults still exist at budget properties. Second, whether the format has built-in structure, which does the social work scenery cannot.
